Student Organization Advisor Responsibilities

Each recognized student organization/club is required to have an advisor who is a member of the faculty or staff of St. Olaf College. Organizations may have more than one advisor. The choice of advisor(s) is the decision of each organization. When an organization is first recognized by the Student Organizations Committee of SGA it is required to obtain a brief letter from the advisor stating that she/he is willing to serve as the official advisor to the group.

There are no "required" activities and levels of involvement for organization advisors at St. Olaf. The relationship between the advisor and the organization is to be determined by the two parties themselves.

Advisors are important to organizations in many ways. Some suggested ways of involvement include:

1. Attend meetings of the organization.   Some advisors attend all meetings, some advisors attend none... this may depend on the nature of the group, the needs of the organization, and the interests of the advisor.  At the very least, an advisor should be in contact with the group's President and/or officers and keep abreast of group issues and events.

2. Become familiar with the financial status of the organization.

3. Be familiar with the events and activities of the group and be certain they adhere to College guidelines.

4. Serve as a resource person.

5. Provide continuity of tradition and history for the group.

6. Make recommendations, when appropriate.

7. Attend advisor training and information sessions

8. Sign SOC Grant and Co-sponsorship forms.
