Accessibility Services

It is the policy of St. Olaf College to create and maintain an environment in which all may learn and work to their fullest potential, limited to the least extent possible by individual disabilities. To accomplish this, it would be helpful, but is not required, for us to know of any student with a disability that requires special accommodations. Any student who has a need for accommodation should contact the coordinator of Student Disability Services who will evaluate documentation, provide individual accommodations, and act as a resource/advocate to ensure equality of opportunity.

Employees who request accommodation should contact the ADA coordinator, who will refer specific requests to staff who will work to meet all appropriate requests.

ELIGIBILITY FOR SERVICES

Students are responsible for furnishing documentation of their disability to the coordinator. Information provided there gives understanding about learning styles, learning strengths and weaknesses and determines what individual accommodations need to
be made. These diagnostic reports must have been made no more than three years prior to the student's request for assistance by appropriate professionals.

SERVICES PROVIDED

Students with disabilities are asked to communicate their needs at least six weeks in advance of an academic term so that services may be provided in a timely fashion. We also suggest they meet with their professors to discuss the impact of their disability on class participation and requirements.
Specific academic accommodations are based upon individual documentation and may include:

  • Extended time for examinations
  • A private, quiet examination room
  • Note-takers
  • Books on tape
  • Alternative test formats
  • Readers
  • Scribes
  • Listening devices
  • Enlarged texts
  • Taped lectures
  • Interpreters
  • Academic coaching
  • Telecommunications device for the deaf (TDD)
  • Closed-captioned TVs in classrooms

The Counseling Center, Office of Residence Life, Information and Instructional Technologies Office, campus libraries and Academic Support Center are also available for consultation and assistance. Other individual needs may be negotiated with the coordinator of Student Disability Services.
