External Hard Drive Note:
When working on media projects, especially video production, computer storage space can become an issue. St. Olaf offers a collection of media creation software that is installed on school-owned computers. However, by default, campus computers erase all files on logout. This prevents long-term storage of projects. There is a limited amount of external hard drive storage connected to computer workstations in RML329. It is offered on a strictly first come, first serve basis. Storage is not monitored by IIT, and data security is not guaranteed.
To remedy the storage spacse limitation, St. Olaf recommends that students participating in media-rich curriculums purchase personal external hard drives to handle the large amounts of data. The hard drives are portable, and can be can be connected to any campus computer. Individual storage space allows for guaranteed availability and data security, making a hard drive a worthwhile investment.
Some specifications to look for when shopping for an external drive:
- 500GB or more storage space
- USB2.0 connectivity, with Firewire 800 a plus
- Extended 3-5 year warranty
