Novarg Worm Running Rampant
The Novarg worm is a mass-mailing infection that generates a huge number of e-mail messages with the subject lines of Hi , Hello , Status , Test , Mail Delivery System , Server Report , Mail Transaction Failed , and Error . The return address is often forged, so even if you know the sender, don't open the attachment unless you were expecting something. The campus e-mail gateway is removing the infected attachments before they can be delivered, but some were able to get on campus before Symantec could issue an update.

Your best defense, as always, is to have an anti-virus program installed on your computer and to keep it up-to-date (check for updates at least once/week). If you think you might be infected, contact the HelpDesk .

Attention Student PC Owners:
IIT is changing the way student-owned PCs connect to the Novell servers Sven and Brit. The deadline to make the change is March 1. Check out the ResHall Networking pages for migration instructions.

Macintosh computers are not affected by these changes.

The January 2004 IIT Newsletter is now online. Topics covered include the 2003-04 Student Survey results, student computer connection changes, a virus/worm update, staffing changes, OS X tips and tricks, the spring seminar series, an update on the new student information system, and several more.
