Macintosh Network Setup Instructions

Mac OS X

Make the physical connection:

To activate the network on your machine, plug your cable into the lower left jack in your room. The other end will connect either to your transceiver or directly into the back of your computer or PCMCIA card Ethernet card.

Configure your computer:
  1. Once your computer is turned on and the Desktop appears, open 'System Preferences' (located in the Apple Menu or the Applications folder).
  2. Select the 'Network' pane.
  3. Click on the 'TCP/IP' tab.
  4. In the 'Configure' drop-down menu, select 'Using DHCP.'
  5. Now click on the 'Appletalk' tab.
  6. Check the box next to 'Make Appletalk Active'.
Connecting to the St. Olaf Network:
  1. In the Finder, click the 'Go' menu and select 'Connect to Server. . .'
  2. In the text field that says 'Address,' type in the server name:
    • For student home directories, enter 'stuhome'
    • For faculty and staff home directories, enter 'fshome'
    • For class folders, enter 'classes'
    • For shared folders, enter 'shared'
    • For apps and installers, enter 'prime'
  3. Click 'Connect'.
  4. Type in your username and password and click 'Connect'
  5. Select the volume you wish to mount and click 'OK'.
  6. The server volume will appear on your desktop.

To create an alias for quicker access to the server volumes, highlight the server volume on your desktop and click File -> Make Alias.
