What you need to know about Office 2007 at St. Olaf
Availability:
There are no public computers or departmental labs on campus that are currently running Office 2007. There is a copy of Office 2007 at the IIT Helpdesk, as well as version converters. Documents can be tested at the Helpdesk to see if they will open properly on the versions of Office available around campus.
Compatibility:
The versions of office that are currently being used in public and departmental labs are Office 2003 (PC) and Office 2004(Mac). These versions will not normally be able to open standard Office 2007 versions of documents. Each lab and classroom computer should be installed with a document converter that will allow your 2007 document to be opened in the older version of Office.
What you can do:
Office 2007 files can be saved under older formats to allow them to be opened by older versions of Office without the need for a converter. This can be done by going under the Office Button -> Save As -> Word 97-2003 Document (This works the same for the other office programs, but the names will be slightly different e.g. Excel 97-2003 Workbook).
With this older format you won’t have to worry about not being able to open it anywhere on campus, and you’ll still be able to open it in Office 2007.
