BASKETBALL RULES

POSTINGS:  Schedules for the league will be posted on the Intramural Sports bulletin board located next to the Phy Ed / Athletics office in Skoglund.

PRE-GAME:  Teams must sign in all players 5 minutes before the scheduled game time.

ID’S ARE REQUIRED.  There will be a 5-minute forfeit time.

FORFEITURE:  Players may play for one team only.  Players playing for more than one team will lose their eligibility and cause forfeitures of their team’s games.  Ineligible players will be suspended for the remainder of the season. All players on the team must play in 1 league game to be eligible for the playoff Bracket.

1st Forfeit: $5 re-entry fee, which must be paid within 24 hours of the forfeit.

2nd Forfeit: Team is automatically out of the league.

EQUIPMENT:  Proper athletic shoes must be worn.  Bare feet, boots, flip flops, etc… will not be allowed.  No pockets or belt loops are allowed on either pants or shorts. No tear away pants are allowed.  No metal barrettes or bobby pins. No hats, No bandannas and absolutely NO JEWELRY!!!  NO EXCEPTIONS!  This rule is in place for your safety and that of others.  If you choose not to follow this rule, you WON’T PLAY!  It’s your choice. Soft scrunches and rubber bands in your hair (not around your wrist/ankle) are legal.

ALL GAMES WILL BE SELF-OFFICIATED.

Questions of judgment must be mediated by the two teams involved. A double forfeit will be recorded for any games that cannot be completed due to continued disagreement between the teams.

1. One member of the Varsity/Junior Varsity Basketball Team is allowed per team.

2. Game Length: The first team to 15 (win by 2, 20 point cap) wins or after 25 minutes, whichever team is ahead.

3. 5 MINUTES PAST GAME TIME IS A FORFEIT!

4. Time Outs: One per team per game - duration 30 seconds in length.

5. All games are self officiated. The two teams involved should mediate questions of judgment. If teams or players cannot agree on the validity of the foul then the player “contesting the call” will shoot a free throw. If the free throw is made the foul is nullified and that team will get the ball. If the free throw is missed the foul shall stand and the “fouled” team shall retain possession.  The Supervisor can make judgment calls, but is not an official.  The supervisors decision is final.

6. 3-on-3 basketball is a half court game played by 2 teams of three with a maximum of 5 per roster. Teams MUST have at least 2 people to start a game. CO-REC: There must be at least 1 male and 1 female on the floor at all times.

7. Substitutions. Substitutions may be made after a basket or any stoppage of play.

8. Coin Toss. Rock/Paper/Scissors for first ball.

9. The possession changes after each basket (this is NOT make it, take it).

10. The “Check Line” is determined by the three point arc. The ball must be beyond the arch at the beginning of each half.

11. On defensive rebounds (including air balls) and steals, the ball must be passed or dribbled beyond the arc. The ball does not need to be given to a different player. As long as the ball goes beyond the arc, there are no limitations on who can shoot it.

12. The Three Point Shot is in affect and 2 points will be awarded for a shot made behind the arc and 1 point for any shot made on or within the arc.

13. If the ball is knocked out of bounds or goes across the mid court line it shall be awarded to the opposing team (the team that did not knock it out).

14. Alternating possession on all jump ball situations will be in affect.

15. The offensive team must “pass the ball in” before a shot is attempted (make one pass before a shot is taken).

16. Out-Of-Bounds. If the ball goes out-of-bounds the offensive team must check the ball with the defensive team at the top of the key.

SLAPPING THE BACKBOARD: Dunking is legal, however, a technical foul will be assessed when a DEFENSIVE or OFFENSIVE player slaps the backboard with EXCESSIVE force. The Supervisor will determine the scoring of the shot.

TECHNICAL FOULS:

RESULT = OPOSSING TEAM 2 PTS. AND THE BALL.  PLAYER WITH TECHNICAL EJECTED FROM GAME.

The following situations may result in a technical foul:

a.        Swearing, delay of game, unsportsmanlike conduct, or challenging the Supervisor.

Ø       Swearing: The use of profane language is not necessary and will not be permitted during Intramural Sports activities at St. Olaf. Excessive profanity is unacceptable and will be penalized. A technical foul will also be assessed to any player that displays poor sportsmanship and/or uses loud, blatant swearing.

Ø       **If the swearing is loud enough for the supervisor to hear, it will be called as a technical**

b.       Interference or verbal abuse from the team bench or crowd supporting that team.

c.        Illegal equipment (Jewelry/Pockets).

Technical fouls are not limited to these situations alone.

If a player receives 2 technical fouls in the tournament (including playoffs) that player will be SUSPENDED FROM THE REMAINDER OF THE TOURNAMENT! (Suspension is up to the discretion of the Intramural Coordinator)

If a team receives 2 technical fouls in the same game (including playoffs) that game will be automatically FORFEITED!
