My IIT Responsibilities

The Microcomputing Consultant is a member of a team-oriented staff and shares in the responsibility of providing the St. Olaf community with academic computing services. The Microcomputing Consultant works closely with other team members to coordinate and support desktop computing on campus, manage the public labs, provide Helpdesk services, and provide general support services for students. The Microcomputing Consultant is responsible for assisting users with questions, working with academic departments, troubleshooting computing problems, and assisting with workshops and seminars. In addition, this position helps with internal auditing and control procedures. The Microcomputing Consultant reports to the Director of Information and Instructional Technologies.

35% - IIT INTERNAL AUDITING AND ASSET MANAGEMENT
--Review and report on discrepancies with the IIT audit log. Duties include daily reading of the logs, comparing results to expected, and reporting discrepancies to the appropriate lIT staff member.

--Verify IIT purchases to ensure that all products are appropriate verified against the purchase order and are appropriately logged as arrived in the purchase order database and are entered into the asset management system as needed.

--Audit the IIT technology request spreadsheet and subsequent purchase orders to ensure that all data is correct and the appropriate technologies are ordered based on the original request.

--Manage the tracking and reporting of IIT assets (computers, printers, one-card equipment, A/V equipment, etc.) including maintaining the accuracy of the records from purchase to disposal.

--Develop and prepare reports as requested such as insurance reports, department technology reports, etc.

--Manage the people records of the database including tracking new, terminated or retired faculty and staff, and arranging for the timely updating of the database with new students.

35% -SYSTEM AND SUPPORT SERVICES
--Assist the Coordinator of Classroom Technologies with the management of the classrooms. Duties may include such tasks as
1. Weekly verifications of systems.
2. Updating asset inventory records.
3. Testing new systems.
4. Documenting procedures.

--Work with the IIT staff to provide documentation and handouts for the programs and services available through the Information and Instructional Technologies.

--Assist the Macintosh Systems Administrator support the Macintoshes in the public and residential hall lab facilities as requested.

--Assist the Windows Systems Administrator maintain and manage the PC's in the public and residential hall lab facilities as requested.

--Assist faculty, staff and students with general computing questions and recommendations.

--Respond to user's phone, walk-in, and Helpdesk inquiries in a timely fashion.

--Provide computing support services like consulting with users about virus and spyware problems, data transfers, and backups, etc.

--Work with IIT staff to prepare software for ITT and public use. This involves thorough testing and evaluation of all new software packages, including documentation.

20% -EDUCATION AND CONSULTING SERVICES
--Serve as the ITT Staff Liaison to academic departments as assigned by the Director. Duties include:
1. working with department faculty on the development of their computing skills, providing training and tutorial as necessary.
2. installing department and lab software,
3. arranging special workshops and sessions of interest to the academic departments
4. supervising the student computing assistants as needed
5. researching. reviewing, and testing new applications and technology ideas applicable to the academic departments
6. coordinating the installation of department labs
7. coordinate the installation of new faculty hardware including physical set up, data transfers, special software installations, etc.
8. participating in technology meetings, workshops, etc. held by and for the departments.

--Provide consulting services to St. Olaf faculty and staff to help refine ideas for innovative projects involving academic computing, including recommendation of appropriate hardware, lab design, and software.

--Provide department-specific and general consulting services to St. Olaf students.

--Conduct computer workshops on IIT-supported hardware and software.

5%-STUDENT WORKERS
--Select, train, supervise and review student computing assistants.

5%-IIT STAFF WORK
--Attend all staff meetings.
--Participate on ITT teams as assigned.
--Evaluate new technologies and software appropriate to St. Olaf. --Prepare monthly activity reports.
--Participate in group projects.
--Perform other duties as requested by the Director.
