Topic for Spring 2012: Medieval Italy, 1050-1350. This seminar will consider divergent developments in north, central, and southern Italy during a formative period in the history of the west. Topics include the medieval papacy and Rome, Sicily, the city states of northern Italy, the countryside, and Dante.

Written Assignments will consist of one 4-page paper and an in-class essay on course readings, plus a major (15-20 page) research paper, to be completed in stages. There will also be three oral assignments. The first will be a small-group presentation, beginning in the third week of the course. For the second assignment, each student will serve as discussion leader for half of one class period, generating questions and guiding discussion. Finally, everyone will present his or her research to the class at the end of the semester. You will be given detailed instructions for all assignments beforehand. The class participation grade consists of regular attendance and participation in class. I expect each of you to come to class for every meeting unless you have a compelling reason for being elsewhere (in which case you should notify me in advance by email), and I expect to hear from each person in the seminar at least once per meeting.
