Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do I declare my major?
Fill out a declaration of major form from the Registrar's Office, Advising Center or your Advisor.
  • How do I change advisors?
Fill out a change of advisor form and have your new advisor sign the form. Forms are available in the Registrar's Office & Advising Center.
  • What is the difference between P/N and S/U grading? A few departments offer courses P/N (pass/no credit) only. In those courses, grades may be used during the term for evaluation of students, but the grade given is only P or N. All other courses at the college are graded; however, a student may choose to take courses S/U (satisfactory/unsatisfactory). Graduate schools and employers sometimes frown on the presence of ungraded courses on a transcript. Students should consult the St. Olaf catalog for suggested use of this option.
  • How many classes can I take S/U?
A maximum of 6, but none of these will count for G.E. requirements except .25 credit Physical Education courses, which can be taken S/U. Only one full course equivalent taken S/U may count toward the minimum requirements for a major or concentration.
  • How do I order my official Transcript?
You can order a transcript by filling out a form at the Registrar's office. You can also print an online form and drop it off at the Registrar's Office with your signature. Cost is $5.00 per copy. Rush service is $10.00 per copy.
  • Can I study abroad my first year?
No, except for foreign language Interim courses with approval of the Instructor.
  • Can I study off-campus my senior year?
Yes, as long as you participate in a St. Olaf approved program it will count toward the residency requirement. Beware: You run the risk of not graduating with your class if grades are not received in time for graduation. If you wish to consider study abroad your senior year, talk to Katherine Baker x3758 or bakerk@stolaf.edu
