IOS - International Visiting Scholars – 2012-2013
During the fall semester St. Olaf hosts four visiting scholars from East China Normal University (ECNU) in Shanghai, China (two professors and two graduate students), a United Board of Christian Higher Educate scholar from Vietnam plus two Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistant (FLTA) scholars who are here from China and Jordan for the academic year. Spring semester brings two new scholars from China’s ECNU. Listed below is a brief introduction of the fall and Fulbright FLTA scholars. Fall Scholars:
Lu, Yuming (hometown: Shanghai, China) Dr. Lu is an Associate Professor at ECNU specializing in world literature and translation studies at the College of International Chinese Studies. Dr. Lu received his Ph.D. from ECNU in 2008. While at St. Olaf his research will focus on John Donne: Spiritual Conflict and Artistic Absurdity. Wang, Wanping (hometown: Shanghai, China) Ms Wang has been lecturing with the English Department at ECNU, Shanghai since 1986. She received her bachelor’s degree from the Shanghai Foreign Language Studies University. Ms Wang was at St. Olaf College during the 2006-07 academic year as a visiting scholar. During her time at St. Olaf she will focus on American women’s literature to enhance one of her courses at ECNU and will continue to do comparative literature between female authors from China and the United States contrasting their writing styles and the ways they write about women. Phuoc Nguyen Hanh Le (hometown: Hue City, Vietnam) Ms Le has a master’s degree from the College of Education at Hue University. She currently serves a Lecturer and Deputy Chair of Vietnamese Study at the College of Foreign Languages at the same institution. Ms Le is supported by the United Board of Christian Higher Education in Asia and hopes to learn about the academic system, management, environment and culture of St. Olaf College, specifically to observe and learn about the administration, in terms of perspectives, responsibility, challenges, lifestyle, commitment and vision and to collaborate in academic programs. Hou, Weiting (Effy) (hometown: Shanghai, China) Ms Hou is a graduate student at ECNU. While at St. Olaf she will be doing a comparative study of US and Australian commercials focusing on psychology and culture. Professor Bill Sonnega, Theater Department, is her academic liaison. Li, Xiaoqin (Sophie) (hometown: Shanghai, China) Ms Li is a graduate student at ECNU and will be researching her thesis focusing on American attitudes, literature and policies on animal protection and benefits of animals. Diane Angell, Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Studies, will be her academic liaison. Ms. Li will be staying at the home of Barbara and Jonathan Hill. Rasha Alsaie (hometown: Amman, Jordan) Ms Alsaie is with the Fulbright FLTA program and will be teaching Beginner and Intermediate Arabic under the Alternative Language Study Option program. She received her bachelor’s degree from University of Jordan in Amman, Jordan and is licensed to teach English. She will be on campus from September 2012- May 2013. Fu Xiao (hometown: Dongying, Shandong Province, China) Ms Fu is a lecturer at Chinese University of Petroleum in Dongying. She received her BA and MA in English from the Chinese University of Petroleum and a MS in Petroleum Engineering from Heriot-watt University. She is a Fulbright FLTA who will be working with the Chinese language program at St. Olaf. She also has served as a tour guide under the supervision of China National Tourism Administration.
