The Mathematics and AQR Placement Process
This page will get you started on a three step process that will help you determine
- if you need to complete the Abstract and Quantitative Reasoning (AQR) general education requirement,
- which field of study (mathematics, statistics, or computer science) is the best choice for you to complete the AQR requirement, and
- which particular mathematics, statistics, or computer science course should be your first one.

Step One: What is the AQR requirement and do you need to complete it?
An Abstract and Quantitative Reasoning (AQR) course is part of the College's general education curriculum. All B.A. students must complete the AQR requirement either by taking a designated course in mathematics, statistics, or computer science or through successful completion of an equivalent course prior to arriving at St. Olaf (click here for more information). B.M. students may choose to complete a general education requirement with an AQR course (click here for more information).
Follow the decision tree below to determine if you have already completed the AQR requirement. Note that this is just a guide, and all relevant score reports from AP exams and credits for college courses must be reported to the Registrar's office.

Have you received college credit for a course in mathematics or statistics?
Make sure the course and grade are reported to the Registrar’s Office. You will be notified in August whether or not your college course satisfies the AQR requirement and be given a list of recommended mathematics, statistics, and computer science courses to take.
You must complete the AQR at St. Olaf. Go to the AQR Information page to determine which courses are best for you in Step Two.
