While an undergraduate he took several semesters off to work in the Applied Research and Electrical Systems Software Design departments at Hamilton Sundstrand Aerospace. He earned his Ph.D. in 2008 from the University of Michigan in Applied & Interdisciplinary Mathematics. From September 2008 through August 2010 Dr. Iwen was a postdoctoral fellow at the Institute for Mathematics and its Applications (IMA) in Minneapolis, MN. He has been a visiting assistant professor at Duke University since September of 2010.
