Synesthesia
Synesthesia, which comes from the Greek “syn,” meaning “with,” and “aisthesis,” meaning “sensation,” is the phemomenon that occurs when different neurological sensory systems get interconnected. There are many varieties of synesthesia, including grapheme-color (number/letter->color), sound-color (pitch/timbre->color), personification (letter, word, sound, etc->personality), number-form (number->point in space), and lexical-gustatory (word->taste).
I have grapheme-color and number-form synesthesia. This means, that whenever I think of a letter, number, or in some cases a shape, I associate a color with it, and “see” the color in my mind’s eye. Numbers, years, days of the week, time, etc also all have a place in my “mind’s eye.” Years follow a pattern on the left, but normal numbers are on the right. Days of the week and times of day are in the middle.
