Languages
German 398: IR Synesthesia
English is a Germanic language, therefore, being fluent in German is significantly helpful in understanding how English as a separate language separated from, but still has strong roots and ties to, German. Being fluent in another language also significantly helps metalinguistics, which is the study of the understanding of language. In this course, I translated a report about synesthesia from the 1800's into English.
Latin 112: Beginning Latin II
Understanding Latin vocabulary and grammar would be very helpful in understanding how languages and their grammar systems evolve. Latin roots are very significant in English as well as other European languages to this day. Latin also had a very complex grammar system, learning which, would significantly help one’s ability to understand modern European grammar systems. It is also interesting to note how grammar has evolved over centuries, becoming simpler and more irregular over time.
Linguistics
Asian Studies 240: Talking In Japan & US: Language, Identity, & Beyond (completed)
This course deals primarily with sociolinguistics; a subfield of linguistics, which deals with spoken language and how dialects, even if subtly, differ from one another, and how they became to be that way. This relates directly to language evolution, and how psychology influences language change in everyday verbal language use.
English 274: English Language and Linguistics
This course provides the basics and background of the field of linguistics. It is crucial to understand the field of linguistics before delving completely into the field of psycholinguistics.
Education 246: English Language Learners
This course deals with the psychology of linguistic pedagogy in first and second language acquisition, which is important in the study of psycholinguistics.
CIS 398: IR Lexical Ambiguity
In this course, I will conduct a research study on lexical ambiguity and analyze the relationship to psycholinguistics.
Psychology
Psychology 231: Research Methods
It is important in the study of psychology, as well as psycholinguistics, to know how to run a research project, and how to statistically analyze the data. This course will demonstrate how that is done.
Psychology 237: Cognition and Memory
This course deals specifically about language and memory acquisition, which is the direct prerequisite to psycholinguistics as a field of study. Psycholinguistics deals with how the mind acquires and uses language, and language could not be used if it was not first acquired through cognition and memory.
Psychology 331: Visual Thinking
This course deals with synesthesia, which relates directly to my plan for a senior project. With the background from this course, I could have a much better understanding of synesthesia to relate it to linguistics.
Psychology 385: Human Neuropsychology
This course deals specifically with how the brain deals with languages, and which areas of the brain perform what function in relation to language use and acquisition.
Science, Misc
Statistics 212: Statistics for Science
Statistics is important in almost every scientific field, especially psychology and psycholinguistics, which deal with predominantly collected human data.
Other Related Courses
Psychology 125: Principles of Psychology (completed)
This course deals with how the mind functions and gives an introduction to how languages and other skills are acquired through learning.
Psychology 271: Personality Psychology (completed)
This course deals with personality, and all of the historical and modern systems of analyzing personality. This is a good background for the more in-depth study of psychology. The course covers historical psychologists, as well as different methods in studying the field.
