CIS Major: Chinese Language

Senior Project

For my senior project I wanted to demostrate a familiarity with the Chinese culture as well as a proficiency in the language. To achieve this I decided to study the game of mahjong (more specifically in how it is played), compose a work of calligraphy, and translate from Chinese to English and English to Chinese. Therefore my project can be broken up into four different sub headings; but rather than have all of my project work on one page, each part of the project will have its own page, linked back to this one.

Mahjong
Mahjong is a traditional Chinese game played with a set 144 tiles (dominoes). For my project I I wrote instructions on how to play the game in a way that can be understood by novice players from the West.

Calligraphy
Chinese calligraphy is a tradition that stretches back over two millennia. For my project I composed a piece of calligraphy using the seal style, deemed the oldest standardized calligraphy style (only the oracle bones are older).

Chinese to English Translation
To demonstrate proficiency in Chinese language I translated a chapter from the little red book of "Quotations from Chairman Mao". This page contains the web version of that translation.

English to Chinese Translation
In addition to translating Mao, I also translated portions of a short story written in English by Ursula Le Guin titled, The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas. This page contains the web version of that translation.

Public Presentation
I presented my project work to the public on April 26th. On this page I have embedded my power point presentation.
