The Intercultural Medical Practice major focuses on the relationship between the doctor and the patient with a special emphasis on relationships where the patient and doctor have different cultural backgrounds. These intercultural relationships are increasing in number today as refugees are forced to flee for safety and find themselves in countries in which they have no understanding of the culture or the customs, which include how medical care is provided. Communication between patient and doctor is essential for effective care. Cultural differences or language barriers can cause misunderstandings in diagnosis or the treatment to follow. In this major I study communication both in action, through an internship and interdisciplinary classes, and in theory with psychology and communication classes. To better understand how cultural differences can affect one’s understanding of health and treatment of ailments, I also take courses in anthropology and religion. My Spanish major coincides well with this major, as it provides me with insight into other cultures’ customs, and my Spanish skills allow me to practice cross-cultural communication.
