Thursday, November 5, 4:30-6 p.m., Valhalla
Dick Rortvedt ’69, Foreign Agricultural Service (retired), U.S. Department of Agriculture
History Major, St. Olaf
Master in Latin American Studies, University of New Mexico
During a 32-year career working for the federal government, Dick pursued his lifelong goals to generate international good will and help feed the world. He served as an agricultural diplomat, helping other countries develop their agricultural potential while still benefiting American farmers and consumers. Rortvedt held 10 different civilian jobs in USDA and visited 28 countries on official business. He worked for the Food for Peace program, directed scientific exchanges, served as liaison to the Inter-American Development Bank and supported agricultural trade and development programs.
Share hot hors d’oeuvres while conversing with Dick on how a broadly-based liberal arts education prepares one for a variety of international career opportunities. Building a career with an international focus is a process that builds on skills developed through a liberal arts education, but is often serendipitous, requiring one to take advantage of opportunities as they arise. No matter what your area of focus, the advice and tips that Dick will share will be valuable as you think about your future.
