Fast start lifts St. Thomas to win over Ole Women

SAINT PAUL, Minn. - The St. Olaf women's basketball team fell victim to an early surge by the University of St. Thomas en route to a 61-47 defeat at Steve Fritz Court on Wednesday night in MIAC action.
The Tommies were able to piece together a 16-1 run in the early stages of the first half building a 27-8 lead, a deficit the Oles were not able to recover from.
St. Olaf, down 38-20 at the half, were able to chip away at the Tommies' lead in the waning minutes of the game, going on a 10-4 run as well as scoring the last eight points of the game.
Kim Cerjan led all Ole scorers putting up 16 points while adding seven rebounds, while Elise Raney chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds of her own.
St. Thomas was paced by strong games by Maggie Weier and Katie Stone, who tallied 20 and 13 points respectively.
With the loss, the Oles drop to 11-8 in the MIAC (13-9 overall), while St. Thomas improves to 17-2 in league play (19-3 overall), good fir a share of first place with Saint Mary's with only a couple weeks to go in the regular season.
Currently sitting in fifth place and in a playoff spot, St. Olaf returns to Skoglund Center on Saturday to take on Hamline University before finishing their schedule with a pair of road games. Tip off against the Pipers is scheduled for 1 p.m.
