D-II Erskine too strong for Ole women

HILTON HEAD, S.C.- Division-II Erskine College (S.C.) proved to be too tough for the St. Olaf women's tennis team as the Flying Fleet defeated the Oles 9-0 on Tuesday morning in Hilton Head, South Carolina.
Both teams are now 1-1 on their trips to Hilton Head, after St. Olaf defeated Virginia Wesleyan and Erskine fell to Northwood College on Monday. The Oles are 4-3 overall, while the Flying Fleet are 9-5.
Erskine got off to a 3-0 lead after doubles play following wins from Corin Hallman and Mika Goyette, Miranda Guthrie and Sarah McDonald, and Abby O'Reilly and Victoria Stephens. Hallman and Goyette defeated Lisa Hall and Julia Ellis 8-3 at first doubles, while O'Reilly and Stephens topped Bailey Kent and Caitlin Owsley by the same scoreline at third.
In singles, the Flying Fleet picked up five straight-set victories in their six wins. Maya MacGibbon was the lone Ole to win a set as she took the second set from Goyette 6-4 at fourth. Goyette, however, prevailed 10-8 in the match tie-breaker. Goyette's 11 wins this season are the most of any Erskine player. Lizzie Carlson pushed Stephens in the second set before going down 6-0, 7-5.
St. Olaf returns to the court on Wednesday afternoon with a match against Colby College (ME). The Mules are 5-1 so far this season and topped MIAC opposition in the form of St. Benedict 7-2 earlier on their trip.
