Men's soccer puts four past UW-Superior

NORTHFIELD, Minn.- For the second straight day, the St. Olaf men's soccer team scored two goals in each half en route to a 4-0 win over UW-Superior on Sunday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
Also for the second consecutive day, David Rosenthal scored two goals for the Oles. Rosenthal's first goal was in the 31st minute when he put a free-kick into the box from midfield and the ball went straight over Yellowjackets goalie Matt Elder and in, giving the Oles a 2-0 lead.
Early in the second half, Rosenthal added his ninth goal of the season from the penalty spot. The 53rd minute penalty kick was earned by Nick Lund. Lund cut in from the left and flicked the ball by a UW-Superior defender who used his hand to stop the ball.
Stephen Johnson made it 4-0 just 91 seconds later with his third goal of the season. After Rosenthal won a free-kick just outside the box on the right wing, Nick Lund swung the ball into the box and Johnson headed home to complete the scoring.
Earlier, Kenzie Lund had started the scoring with his third goal of the year. Ryan Johnsrud and David Rosenthal earned assists on the goal. Johnrsud crossed the ball from the left to Rosenthal, who laid the ball off for Lund to fire into the top corner.
St. Olaf (9-5-1, 4-2-1 MIAC) outshot UW-Superior (8-6-1) 18-6 for the game, including a 12-2 advantage in shots on goal. Rosenthal led the way for the Oles with six shots and Kenzie Lund added three. Ben Kasper led the Yellowjackets with three shots.
Harry Ullmann played the first 80 minutes and made two saves to earn the win for St. Olaf. UW-Superior's Matt Elder took the loss, conceding all four goals in the first 77 minutes. Elder made seven saves in the contest.
The Oles continue their push to make the MIAC playoffs on Saturday when Concordia (6-9-0, 3-4-0 MIAC) comes to town. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm.
