Women's tennis team competes in USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships

St. PETER, Minn.- Members of the St. Olaf women's tennis team competed in the USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships held at Gustavus Adolphus College on September 21-23.
Julia Ellis, Kristi Kroker, and Lisa Hall competed in the main draws of the tournament for singles. Despite having blisters, Ellis made the third round before falling to UW-Whitewater's Alexandra Bayliss 6-0, 6-2. In the first round, Ellis topped Gustavus' Mallory Shellum 7-6(3), 6-2 and then beat UW-Lacrosse's Abby Tresedder 6-2, 7-5 in the second round.
The bottom half of the draw included St. Olaf's Kristi Kroker and Lisa Hall. Kroker lost her opening match to Carroll's Abigail Pellett in two close sets 6-4, 6-4. She then went on to win her first consolation match before falling to Luther's Maggie Helms. Hall won her opening round match against Gretchen Bachmeier of UW-Eau Claire 6-0, 6-2. She then faced Coe's Tai Lucero who defeated Hall 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles, Ellis and Hall got a first round bye and won their next match before losing to Megan Kasten and Jackie Vitale of UW-Whitewater. Hall and Ellis beat Bethel's Lisa Scheevel and Steph Brown 9-7 in their second round match.
Meanwhile, Martha Hogan, Maya MacGibbon, Caitlin Owsley, Bailey Kent, Erin Hynes, Liz Eggert, and Andrea Jumes all competed in the Gustavus Fall Invite, which consisted of six draws of 16 players. Hogan won two matches before going down to Luther's Adrianna DePaolis 6-2, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of her draw.Maya MacGibbon also won two matches in her draw before being eliminated by UW-Eau Claire's Mary Frassetto 6-1, 6-4. Caitlin Owsley won her opening round match 6-0, 6-1 before falling 6-3, 6-3 to Wartburg's Katherine Ross. After a tight first-round match, Bailey Kent ended up making the quarters of her draw before losing a super-tiebreak 10-8 to UW-Whitewater's Kelly Foster. Erin Hynes won two matches, including a 10-7 super-breaker win over Luther's Annie Whiteley before defaulting due to injury on the second day. In the sixth draw, Liz Eggert won her first-round match but lost 6-2, 6-3 to UW-LaCrosse's Kimmy Mrokez in the second round.
In the doubles draw for the Gustavus Fall Invite, three St. Olaf teams each lost their first matches. Hynes and Hogan had a first-round bye before falling to St. Catherine's Bridget Ferrell and Megan Buysse 9-7. Eggert and Andrea Jumes also lost their first match to Arial Bloniarz and Maggie Berens of St. Norbert 8-4. Kent and Owsley fell to Laura Birky and Diannah Watson of Coe 8-6 in their first match. Eggert and Jumes went on to win the consolation portion of the draw.
