Men's tennis competes at USTA/ITA Midwest Regional Championships

ST. PETER, Minn.- Last weekend, four members of the St. Olaf men's tennis team competed in the 2012 USTA/ITA Men's Tennis Midwest Regional Championships held at Gustavus Adolphus College.
St. Olaf's Charlie Reinertsen, Stephen Nolan, Andy Catania, and Joey Kronzer competed in the main singles draw. Nolan won his first two matches each 6-2, 6-2 against Stephen Tyndel (Mac) and Josh Truebolld (Wartburg). In the third round, Nolan ran into Saint John's Fabricio Moncada and lost 6-1, 7-5. Moncada, the number three seed, made it to the final before losing to Gustavus' Mya Smith-Dennis in three sets.
Andy Catania earned the #17 seed and also made the third round. Catania picked up straight-set wins over Bryan Miles (GAC) and Willie Paul (SJU) in the opening two rounds. In the third round, Catania lost a close match to the Elliot Czarnecki (Grinnell) who was the 15th seed. Czarnecki won 6-4, 7-5 over Catania.
First-year Joey Kronzer also made the third round before losing 6-1, 6-1 to Smith-Dennis. After an opening round defeat of Demetrius Johnson (UDBQ), Kronzer knocked off Garrett Rukkikoff (Cornell), 6-4, 6-1. Reinertsen lost his opening match to Luther's James Ayer.
In doubles, Reinertsen and Kronzer lost to Andrew Bayliss and Ben Shkylar (UWW) 8-6. Bayliss and Shkylar were the number seven seeds and made it to the semi-finals before going down to Amrik Donkena and Mya Smith-Dennis of Gustavus, the tournament's top seeds.
