Ole women shut out St. Scholastica 2-0
September 8, 2012
NORTHFIELD, Minn.- Madison Van Wylen and Amanda Leone were on target as the St. Olaf women's soccer team defeated the College of St. Scholastica 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
After scoring the game-winning goal in double overtime at Luther earlier in the week, Van Wylen opened the scoring in the 34th minute. She took a pass from fellow first-year Emily Sierakowski and cut in from the right and hit a left-footed shot into the top right corner to put the Oles ahead.
Leone doubled St. Olaf's lead midway through the second half again off an assist from Sierakowski. Midfielder Megan Fellow picked up the ball in midfield and spread the ball wide to Sierakowski on the left. Sierakowski took the ball past a defender to the endline and crossed on the ground for Leone to put past Saints goalie Kelsey Reeves. The goal was Leone's first of the year.
The Oles held a 17-3 advantage in shots, including a 11-1 margin in shots on goal. On another day, Van Wylen could have had a hat trick as she hit the target with four of her six shots. Andrea Beatt had the lone shot on goal for St. Scholastica.
Nora Forbes saved Beatt's solitary effort before giving way to Lindsay Dolan for the final eight minutes. Reeves made nine saves for the Saints, including several outstanding saves in the closing minutes.
Reeves made two saves on Van Wylen in the final 15 minutes to keep the score 2-0. With about five minutes left, Van Wylen tried to go around Reeves on a breakaway but Reeves made a sprawling save. Kyle Clifford had a great chance with two minutes left but her shot from the left side of the box was saved by Reeves.
The win moves St. Olaf to 2-1-0 on the young season, while St. Scholastica drops to 1-1-1. The Oles next face UW-Stevens Point on Sunday afternoon in their second game in two days. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m.
